South Africa’s Bill of Rights is built on the values of dignity, equality, and freedom – principles that guide everything we do at Zip Zap. For over 30 years, we have used the power of circus to create a space where young people from all walks of life can dream, grow and thrive. Our stage is more than a place of performance, it’s a platform for transformation.
Here is how we bring these values to life every day.
Equality
At Zip Zap, everyone has a place. Whether a first-time flyer or a seasoned performer, everyone is treated with respect and given the same opportunity to succeed. Circus is built on teamwork, there are no solo successes. It is about lifting each other up, in every sense of the word. Regardless of the background, every child who walks through our doors is given the same chance to shine.
Freedom
Expression takes many forms, and at Zip Zap, movement is a voice. Our young performers tell their stories through acrobatics, aerial and balancing acts, breaking barriers without saying a word. The freedom to be yourself, to create, and to inspire is at the core of what we do. Here, young people gain the confidence to take up space, not just on stage, but in life.
Education
Beyond the tricks and techniques, we teach life skills that last a lifetime: discipline, perseverance and teamwork. But we also recognise that education must extend beyond the circus ring. “The little contribution I am trying to make, is to open horizons for youth who have not benefited from stable environments, or access to education,” says Katherine Hilderbrand, a long time Zip Zap supporter and advisory board member. Through reading sessions, films, discussions, debates, we help our students prepare for life beyond Zip Zap.
Culture
Zip Zap is a meeting place, a space where young people from different communities come together, learn from each other, and build something greater than themselves. Our nine programmes, give them the tools to dream big and the confidence to chase those dreams. As club juggler, Akho Narwele puts it here, “It’s not just about performing, it’s about representing where you come from and inspiring others.”
