The Zip Zap Circus family is once again uniting to participate in the upcoming Cape Town Cycle Tour, bringing together a diverse team of riders, including local heroes and enthusiasts from as far as France and the US.
This year, the Zip Zap team, wearing their vibrant colours, has been preparing for the cycle tour through rigorous training sessions and gearing up their bikes. In addition to their physical readiness, the team is banding together in a collective fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding platform, BackABuddy. All the proceeds generated from their campaign will directly contribute to supporting the non-profit organisation’s youth and outreach programmes. These programmes, designed for children from diverse backgrounds, are provided free of charge and have been creating incredible opportunities for over 30 years.
Meet Phelelani Ndakrokra – Riding with Ree
Adding excitement to this year’s cycling endeavour is Phelelani Ndakrokra, fondly known as “Remember” or “Ree,” a beloved performer in Zip Zap’s professional troupe. Renowned for his captivating performances on the aerial straps and cyr wheel, Phelelani is now taking on a new challenge – conquering the Cape Town Cycle Tour!
When asked about his decision to participate in the 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour, Phelelani expressed, “Honestly – for fun! I love cycling and ride to and from work every day, so I’m happy for a chance to explore more of Cape Town. I enjoy challenging myself, something I do every day on the training floor and on the stage. This is an opportunity for me to push my limits in an area I’m less familiar with.”
Ree began his journey with Zip Zap 14 years ago through the 2nd Chance programme which partnered with the Multiservice Centre in Salt River. His journey has been one of learning to trust his circus family, growing in discipline and finding his voice through movement. His decision to race and fundraise this year is a testament to his love for Zip Zap and his desire to help the next generation of programmes and kids grow.

Leading the Charge – Laurence Estève, Zip Zap’s CEO
Leading the charge once again is Zip Zap’s CEO, Laurence Estève, who has led the organisation for over 30 years. Despite having to push herself to train each day, Laurence remains determined, driven by the goal of fundraising for the kids Zip Zap serves.
“It’s becoming harder to cycle each year, but while I am out there, I think about the kids we serve. To fundraise for them, to overcome and succeed is what fuels me. I need your donations to keep me fuelled,” Laurence emphasised.
